Friday Night Smackdown – September 23, 2011

It doesn’t seem like I’m going to find Superstars anytime soon, so for now I’ll just skip it. Really wanted to see the Ted DiBiase versus Tyson Kidd match, hopefully I’ll find at least that much. I’ve heard a lot of good things about this week’s episode but I’ve avoided the spoilers, let’s hope they don’t let me down. Although it can’t be worse then TNA Impact this week, so I’m optimistic this week.

Smackdown still has the single worst opening song of all the wrestling shows currently. We open with everyone around the ring, and John Laurinaitis in the ring. Who decided this guy has any charisma for being on TV, and he has the worst voice. JL mentions the firing of Miz and Truth and he agrees with it? This makes no sense, as I expected him to complain about it and try to rehire them both. JL introduces the new World Champion, Mark Henry, never thought I’d see this. Henry reiterates what he said on RAW and calls out Ezekiel Jackson and Teddy Long as non believers. Of course we can’t let someone get through an opening segment without Triple H being involved, as he comes out. Triple H takes the microphone and is about to speak, when Christian, who was at ringside, interrupts and kisses HHH’s ass. Christian says he is the face of Smackdown and wants one more match to be champion. Christian then says that after Hell in the Cell, when someone we know chokes, as he always does, he’ll pick up the reigns and lead Smackdown and defeat Orton. Christian is going to get killed out there. Hey, camera time for the Usos, Rosa, and some other guys I can’t recognize. HHH says he’ll give Christian a chance to lead, because tonight it’s a lumberjack match, against Mark Henry for the World Title. The winner will face Orton at HITC. Wonder if they’d make Henry a 2 day champion, they did it to Christian?

1. Heath Slater lost to Sheamus 6/10

I wonder who’s going to win this match? Heath Slater, the new Iron Mike Sharpe. Remember when Slater was getting pushed? Michael Cole gets line of the week, Ronald McDonald versus girl from Wendy’s. Surprised to see Slater get some offense here, expected a complete squash. Fifteen minutes in and Booker is already on my nerves. A nice neckbreaker from Slater, very impressive looking. I don’t care for face Sheamus, and now he pounds his chest like Orton on the mat, and Shawn Michaels stomps the mat, before hitting his finisher. Sheamus wins, no surprise, with the Brogue Kick. A pretty good little match, as Slater got in enough offense not to look to week, and I like Sheamus the kick over the Razor’s Edge move, looks better. Nice start to the show.

Backstage to Great Khali, is he still employed, stretching and Christian comes into the picture. Christian talks to Khali, who makes a size joke, and Christian thinks he has a deal with Khali.

2. Wade Barrett pinned Justin Gabriel 7/10

Well, look at that, two more former Nexus member who’ve done nothing since the team broke up. Gabriel has the second worst music on this show, right after the opening music. Another pretty good back and forth match, as Wade scores the win with Wasteland. Justin gets better each week, would like to see him get a push against Cody Rhodes.

Backstage to Randy Orton, knew he wouldn’t stay off TV for even one week to sell the beating from Henry. The man most likely to put someone to sleep when he talks, he’s so monotone, like Dean Malenko but without the talent. The same HITC video from RAW replays. We come back to Christian talking with Ezekiel Jackson, am I the only fan of Jackson? I think he could be a huge star, ala Warrior or Sid if pushed right. He may not have the technical abilities but he’s impressive to watch. Anyways, once again Christian thinks he has a deal with Zeke now.

3. <FROM THE VAULT> Rey Mysterio (IC Champ) beat CM Punk 8/10

Seems odd seeing Punk with his long hair again, and hearing Jim Ross on commentary as well. This is 2 days before Night of Champions 2009, and just at the start of Punk’s heel turn. The match has a bit of clipping, but still been a great match. Ziggler makes his way down to ringside, they mention he’s not with Maria tonight, which reminds me, I miss Maria. I always hate Mysterio matches, as everyone always lands perfectly in the ropes for his stupid 619 finisher, Rey used to be so cool to watch, but since coming to WWE every match is a clone of the previous. If you’ve seen one Rey match in WWE, you’ve seen them all. Rey wins by DQ, as Dolph interferes. It’s pretty sad that Punk, who was on his way to main event at the PPV had to lose to Rey two night prior. Was a great match, even with the clipping and cheap finish. Punk can carry almost anyone to a good match. Back to present day.

4. AJ & Kaitlyn lost to Beth Phoenix & Natalya 5/10

How can Beth and Natty be called the Divas of Doom when they never get to win? Seriously, they should be running roughshod over the entire division and destroying them all. Damn, AJ is smoking hot, just had to say it. She’s up there with Mickie and Rosa. This should be a quick squash match, as AJ and Kaitlyn may be hot, but they shouldn’t be able to hang with the DOD. Beth pins AJ with the Glam Slam, well at least they let them win this match. Just the way it should have been, pure domination from the DOD.

5 Randy Orton lost to Cody Rhodes by DQ 6/10

Considering that Randy lost at the PPV, he should have come out injured, and Cody should be able to pull of an upset, since Cody is the IC champ. However it is Randy, so there is no way Cody’s winning tonight, can’t see Randy jobbing two shows in a row. Was going good till Randy snapped and cracked Cody in the face with his mask. Cody’s facial expression was priceless, just a look of shock. Orton pulls Cody up and just unloads on him with the mask and follows up with the elevated DDT. I guess Rhodes is taking a vacation for a while, as the refs pour into the ring. We quickly cut away, which sucks, as we don’t get to see any blood on this feed. Damn was looking forward to the gore, stupid censors. I hear Rhodes was pissing blood after the DDT. Good thing I found it on Youtube.

We go backstage to Sheamus, as Christian hands him a potato as a peace offering. Christian tries to get Sheamus to help him tonight and promises him a whole bag of potatoes. Christian leaves thinking they have a deal, as Sheamus bites into his potato.

6. The Great Khali destroyed Jindar Mahal DUD

This has all the making of a train wreck with these two. Well, that was a horrible match, hope that’s the last we see of Mahal.

7. Sin Cara pinned Daniel Bryan 6/10

Once again we get that horrible lighting for Sin Cara. They’re saying Bryan has been on a download spiral and losing streak, that’s a great way to build someone up. It worked so well for Lance Storm. We have interference from Sin Cara II who takes out SC I, and hits a crossbody on DB for the win. Stupid ending to what could’ve been a great match.

Back to Christian, who knocks on Randy Orton’s door and out comes Zack Ryder. Christian asks Ryder for some assistance, to ask Orton to help him, as Zack gets a call and walks off. Christian decides against knocking on the door again.

8. Air Boom (Evan Bourne & Kofi Kingston) defeated Jimmy & Jey Uso to retain the tag titles 7/10

Wow, two actual tag teams. Could we be seeing a return of tag teams in the WWE finally. There’s enough lower/mid card guys they could make some new teams, build them slowly, not break them up, and have a good tag division. This is non-title, so wouldn’t be surprised if the Usos win the match. Evan scores the win after the Air Bourne, a very fast paced exciting match. Would’ve like it to get more time, but still a good match.

9. Christian lost to Mark Henry, Henry retains the World Title in a lumberjack match. 7/10

Time for the main event, a lumberjack match. Let’s see who we have for lumberjacks, Kofi, Percy Watson, Titus O’Neil, Johnny Curtis, Wade, Heath, Zeke, Usos, Justin, Darren Young, Khali, Ryder, Tyson Kidd, Trent, Mahal, Yoshi, DiBiase, Sin Cara, JTG, Evan Bourne, Daniel Bryan, and Derek Bateman. Well less then 10 minutes left for the main event, as usual. Christian falls out of the ring, and Zeke holds everyone back, and then drives a knee into Christian’s midsection before throwing him back in. It’s been all Henry until he missed a charge in the corner, and finally Christian gets some offense in. Christian finally knocks the champion down after a pair of missile dropkicks. Christian makes the mistake going for the Killswitch, but Henry powers out. Nice sunset flip attempt, as Henry slides out and everyone attacks Henry! Henry takes them all out, using Trent as a weapon. Khali the only man standing our there as Christian backs up the aisle, but Sheamus catches him from behind, tosses him in. Right into the World’s Strongest Slam for the win. Orton quickly comes out before Henry can celebrate and hammers the champ, a dropkick sends Henry to the floor. Orton does his goofy faces as he fade to black.

9. Christian lost to Mark Henry, Henry retains the World Title in a lumberjack match. 7/10

A much better show than Impact was, as we had nine matches in two hours. Only 2 matches were bad, the rest were good. Sadly the best match was the Vault match, but I was impressed with the Usos, Gabriel, Wade and Henry tonight. Overall a good solid show from Smackdown, I’ll give it a 7 out of ten. They kept the backstage stuff to a minimum and focused on the in ring action. Would like to see more from Gabriel & the Usos as they could be big in time.
